MINNESOTA

State Gemstone: Lake Superior Agates (1969)

While in Minnesota, you’ll want to head to Lake Superior to search for the Lake Superior Agates. These beautiful rocks can be found in localities across almost the entire state due to the relatively recent glacial activity which is responsible for transporting and exposing these unique specimens.

Glacial activity carved out Minnesota’s lakes and transported these rocks from the basalt flows to the north and left them behind in glacial deposits for you and I to find.

Minnesota also has an ancient history of Volcanoes and vast seas once covered the entire state.

These are a few of the things you may want to take along with you on your dig:

A small, handheld garden rake
A handheld trowel
Knee pads or an old cushion to kneel/sit on
A bucket, for holding your finds
Newspaper or grocery bags to wrap and protect your crystals

While digging crystals you will probably be outside for a long time. You may want to bring:

Water
Snacks
A wide hat
Sunscreen
Bug spray, and a small first aid kit (Quartz can be sharp!)
